Free ride into the future

As a 15-year-old in the country, the moped driver’s license stands for pure freedom. The three top students of the schondra middle school, simon wiebner, mirco kuhn and marcel kriebsch, are currently on the road on their two-wheelers every day: yesterday they collected their final certificates from school, in the coming weeks they will be meeting up with their former classmates from the graduating class, and from september some of them will also be riding their mopeds to the training company.
All 18 ninth graders at schondra middle school graduated from high school this year, and 15 also took part in the "quali", the qualified high school diploma, successfully. With the exception of one, all of them already know what’s next: some continue their schooling, most have secured their apprenticeships.
"I’m doing an apprenticeship as an electronics technician for energy and building technology, says simon wiebner. The 15-year-old from schonderling was top of his class with a grade of 1.9 and, like most of his classmates, got his apprenticeship through internships: during the summer vacation two years ago, he got his first taste of the job at the company neuland in his hometown of schonderling. "I always wanted to become a carpenter", reports simon, but: "i enjoyed it with the electricians".
In 8th grade. In the first class, he then did an internship at "hanse haus" in oberleichtersbach, in the past school year it went again in the practical course and almost the whole 9. Class about one day a week back to the company neuland.
Marcel kriebsch (16) had an easier time deciding on the same profession: "it was clear from an early age," says simon, he follows in the footsteps of his father, who has his own electrical company in untergeiersnest. "The profession is very versatile, he is looking forward to his apprenticeship in his parents’ company starting in the fall. As the third best with a grade of 2.38, he would have been placed in another company in view of the current good situation on the apprenticeship market.
Mirco kuhn (15) from platz also follows a family tradition, but not in the family business. This year, he was the second best student at the schondra secondary school and won the race for an apprenticeship at the rothkegel metal construction company in volkers with his grade of 2.16 and an internship. Mirco has been working in his father’s workshop since he was a child: "that’s where i got it a bit in the cradle", he always had a clear goal, which he then set with a career counselor on the training "metal construction, specializing in construction technology" narrowed.
"It was a very open class", class teacher walter kuhn looks back on his graduating class and is pleased that the young people have a perspective on the job market. The schondra middle school also benefits from the many medium-sized businesses in the communities of schondra and oberleichtersbach. The final trip that kuhn took with his students also went well, he says.
For the graduation ceremony, kuhn and his students came up with a competition between boys and girls. The challenge was one of expertise and athletic skill. In the end, the boys won the geography quiz, but "the main thing was to get to know each other, emphasizes kuhn.
"Wherever we went – on class trips and excursions – you could be seen outside with us. Many people have approached me and said: this is a super class", kuhn also praised the students at the party. However, he would have liked to see more team spirit and a willingness to take responsibility from his students – character traits that will become increasingly important in their future careers.
Traditionally, principal otto granich ended his speech with his well-intentioned index finger as a warning against drugs, smoking and breakneck actions: "take care of your body! You have only one!" the mayor of schondra bernold martin (csu) said: "you are the jewel of the businesses! Make something of it!" and sees the shortage of skilled workers as an opportunity for young people.
